Haitian Tuskegee Airmen

Among the almost one thousand pilots trained at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama to fight in WWII were also five Haitians. Graduates of the prestigious Ecole Militaire D’Haiti, they arrived to train at Tuskegee in early 1943. While the bomber units were credited with hundreds of combat missions, distinguished flying crosses, and medals, Haitian pilots were also subjected to the same dehumanizing racist policies and behaviors as their African-American colleagues.
